Some foods do not go well with braces. Hard and sticky foods can break the braces off your teeth and must be avoided. These are foods such as whole apples and carrots, popcorn and sticky lollies. Sugar-free chewing gum is allowed.

It is also important to minimise your sugar intake during treatment. When sugar sits on your teeth the bacteria in your mouth turn it into acid. Acid sitting on your teeth causes something called demineralisation where the minerals that make up your teeth are lost. This results in white or brown spots on your teeth after the braces are removed. But don’t worry – the great news is that this is completely preventable with a healthy diet and good oral hygiene!
