Dr Shelley Coburn
BDS, D Clin Dent (Ortho), AOB certified
Our orthodontist is Dr Shelley Coburn and she would love to meet you to discuss how we can create a beautiful smile that you will be proud to show off.
Dr Coburn is originally from New Zealand and completed her dental training at the University of Otago. Following graduation, she worked as a general dentist for 8 years in New Zealand and Australia. In this time, she worked as part of an Oral and Maxillofacial surgery team, in private practice and was involved in teaching dental students at the University of Sydney. Her passion for orthodontics took her to Adelaide where she completed a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics. She was awarded a prize for her research on the bone biology of orthodontics so you can rest assured she knows how your teeth move at the most detailed level!
Dr Coburn is an active member of the orthodontic profession serving as a committee member on the Victorian Branch of the Australian Orthodontic Society. Keeping up with the latest developments and research in orthodontics is a priority for Dr Coburn and she attends local and international orthodontics conferences when the opportunity allows. She is a member of the Australian Dental Association, the World Federation of Orthodontists and is certified by the Australian Orthodontic Board.
Accredited as an Invisalign provider, Dr Coburn will give you plenty of options on how she can straighten your teeth – braces are not always required. Dr Coburn has a special interest in early intervention and enjoys getting to know her patients and their families during their orthodontic treatment.
Outside of work Dr Coburn loves to travel, explore new areas of Melbourne (especially the street art) and spend time with her husband and baby daughter.
Your first contact with our practice will usually be with Tania, our friendly receptionist and clinical assistant. Tania started her dental career in orthodontics in 2004. She has worked in many areas of dentistry but knew that her passion lay in orthodontics so we were lucky to have her join the Western Ortho team in 2019. Tania loves getting to know our patients and their families throughout their orthodontic journey from start to finish. Her favourite part of her job is seeing the reaction of our patients when they see their beautiful new smiles at the end of treatment! Don’t hesitate to ask Tania any questions about your orthodontic treatment – she is extremely knowledgeable and will explain what is happening with your appointments every step of the way.
Outside of work Tania enjoys reading, travelling and is a huge animal lover. Before joining our team she had the opportunity to combine her passions when she lived in the Philippines and volunteered her time at an animal rescue and rehabilitation centre.
Why choose Western Ortho?
We are a small orthodontic practice and unlike some of the larger clinics where a dental hygienist carries out much of the work, here you will see Dr Coburn at every appointment. That means she puts the braces on, and monitors you every step of the way, right down to removing them and fitting your retainers.
Calm and Friendly Environment
We know many people are nervous about attending for dental care and the thought of wearing braces or Invisalign can be daunting! We provide a welcoming environment to discuss your concerns and treatment options. Dr Coburn has first-hand knowledge of what life is like with braces as she had treatment quite recently as an adult!
No Hidden Costs
We take full records at your first visit (if required) and can refer you for x-rays that are bulk-billed by Medicare. If we need to see you a second time for further discussion about your teeth, there are no additional fees. If treatment is recommended, we will provide you with a written quote that includes the total fees for all your appliances and appointments.
We offer interest free payment plans
We appreciate that orthodontic care is a big financial investment and we aim to make it as affordable as possible and be transparent about the costs involved.
